St Mary's Island
2km (1.5 miles) of riverside walk on the River Medway for this major residential development at Chatham Dockyard, for SEEDA. Designed to reflect the local character of the river and use the local Kentish ragstone also used in the Tudor Upnor Castle across the river. The walk connects the residential areas to the river and its history. The habitat of the scarce golden samphire is enhanced in the design.
Singleton
The extensive open spaces in this urban fringe development on land, owned by Kent County Council, for some 2000 houses are designed to bring the countryside in to the town. The two hectare lake, ponds and alder carr along the River Stour have created new habitats in what was previously arable land. The pleasures of the countryside are available on the doorstep in the carefully considered design in a relatively small area.
